Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit will eventually build electric vehicles in all its assembly plants worldwide, CEO Rupert Stadler tells employees in Germany.
The declaration comes as Audi’s works council presses the company for a decision by the end of this year on which of the vehicles will be produced in German factories.
Audi has said it expects to introduce more than 20 hybrid and all-electric models before 2025. The company operates factories in Belgium, Hungary and Mexico in addition to Germany.
The first two such models will go into production in Belgium, starting with an all-electric midsize crossover vehicle in 2018. The plant will add the coupe-like e-tron Sportback four-door car (pictured) in 2019.
Audi also is developing an all-electric small car that will ride on VW’s modular electrification platform when it debuts in 2020. Audi and sister division Porsche are engineering a special premium EV platform that will carry additional electric models they plan to introduce beginning in 2021.
