Audi AG intends to offer a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain for its large Q7 crossover vehicle in 2015, an unnamed company source tells Automotive News Europe.

The system, expected to use a V-6 diesel as its primary power source, will be rolled out several months after the Q7 debuts with conventional gasoline and diesel options, according to ANE. Its source says the plug-in diesel will be available in Europe and the U.S.
The only plug-in diesel currently on the market is the Volvo V60 sport wagon. It debuted last year and is available only in Europe.
Audi said several months ago it plans to offer a plug-in diesel system in the company's A8 large sedan, but it didn't say when. CEO Rupert Stadler has declared the company bullish about plug-in hybrid powertrains because they deliver significant fuel economy benefits without the range problems of all-electric systems.
