Volkswagen AG's Audi unit has opened a high-voltage battery facility near Ingolstadt, Germany, to develop and make prototypes of next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
The 37,700-sq.-ft. lab houses about 100 electronics engineers hired specifically for battery research. The facility can test high-voltage cells, modules and complete battery packs; produce small quantities of full battery systems; and design and build its own hardware and software for everything it makes.
Audi says the facility also will develop and supply batteries for its upcoming fleet tests of the R8 e-tron and A1 e-tron electric cars.
