Audi AG says the new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in its S3 Sportback model averages nearly 34 mpg on the European test cycle compared to 28 mpg for the model's previous 2.0-liter engine.
The new 300-hp four-banger delivers 280 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual or six-speed S tronic transmission. Both gearboxes use five closely spaced gear ratios for performance and a "tall" top gear for fuel economy.
Audi reports 0-100 kph acceleration times of 5.5 seconds for the manual and 5.0 seconds for the dual-clutch transmission. The car has an electronically limited top speed of 150 kph (155 mph). All-wheel drive is standard.
The new engine features such updates as dual injection, an exhaust manifold integrated with the cylinder head and improved thermal management.
The S3 Sportback's fuel efficiency is aided by a switch to low-rolling resistance 225/40-series tires and a revised design that weighs 70 kg (154 lbs) less than the previous model.
