A group of employees at Volkswagen AG's assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., hopes to create its own alternative to the United Auto Workers union, Reuters reports.
The group aims to set up a local that would be the first of a new union of hourly and salaried workers called the American Council of Employees.
The anti-UAW group is led by Mike Burton, who led a successful effort in February to defeat the UAW's attempt to be recognized by the Chattanooga workers. Burton was assisted by the anti-UAW Southern Momentum, a group he says may help in forming ACE.
The UAW tells Reuters the local it set up for the Tennessee plant has attracted "substantially" more than 700 members. The union needs more than 750 hourly workers to gain a majority.
