Industry trade group ACEA is urging the European Commission to adopt "realistic timeframes and conditions" for more accurately assessing exhaust emissions from diesels.
The EC is pushing for accelerated rules in the wake of Volkswagen AG's diesel emission cheating scandal. U.S. government investigators say some of VW's diesels were rigged to pass emission tests but emit 40 times the allowable limit of nitrogen oxides on the road.
ACEA says its members are "fully aligned" with the need for more accurate NOx measurements. But demanding significantly lower on-road results too quickly could push diesel prices up enough to force them out of the market. The group asks the EC to give manufacturers enough time to avoid jeopardizing the diesel's role in helping them meet future carbon dioxide emission targets.
