Time Nearing for First Lambo EV?

Volkswagen AG’s Lamborghini unit is mulling an all-electric powertrain for the 2+2 grand tourer it aims to launch in about five years.
The timing of the new sedan, which hasn’t been formally approved, could be right for a full EV, Maurizio Reggiani, who heads Lamborghini’s research and development efforts, tells Autocar. The magazine points to the continued performance improvements and growing public acceptance of the technology.
The GT would join the Urus SUV/crossover and Aventador and Huracan supercars in Lamborghini’s core lineup. The carmaker also is launching its first electrified model: the mild-hybrid Sian hypercar.
Reggiani notes that any Lamborghini EV likely would use a Volkswagen Group platform to reduce development costs. The best current option, Autocar suggests, is the PPE architecture that underpins the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan.
The new model also could borrow the Sian’s supercapacitor technology to boost output. The Sian teams a 6.5-liter V-12 with the supercapacitor and a 48-volt gearbox-integrated electric motor to generate a combined 819 hp, making it the most powerful Lambo ever.
Lamborghini has been mulling the possibility of a fourth model for several years. The debate, which had focused on either a front-engine GT or a third mid-engine model to complement the Aventador and Huracan, now includes an EV. But Reggiani says the near-term focus will be on adding variants of the brand’s top-selling Urus model.
