About 100 construction workers have walked off the job at Tesla Motor Inc.'s big battery plant site in Nevada in protest over the use of workers from other states.
The walkout involves members of the local carpenters union. Their protest is aimed at Brycon Corp., a New Mexico-based third-party construction contractor, according to Bloomberg News.
Tesla tells Bloomberg more than 50% of the contractor’s workers at the site are from Nevada. Tesla also says more than 75% of the project’s workers overall are Nevada residents.
Tesla’s 10 million-sq-ft “gigafactory” north of Reno eventually will cost $5 billion and by 2020 be able to make enough lithium-ion cells per year to power 500,000 electric vehicles, according to the company.
