Robert Bosch GmbH says combining its own knowhow and financial wherewithal with its acquisition of Hayward, Calif.-based Seeo Inc. last month will allow it to surpass industry goals to double the energy density and driving range of lithium-ion batteries by 2020. The supplier also claims the new batteries will be considerably less expensive.
Seeo's solid state technology enables battery cell anodes to be made of pure lithium in place of graphite, which Bosch says significantly increases storage capacity. The new cells also are less flammable, according to the company.
Bosch also is working with Japan's GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi Corp. on advanced battery technology. It predicts that 15% of all new vehicles built worldwide after 2025 will be hybrids or full-electric models.
