Mitsubishi Electric Automation’s Remarkable Training Program
Yes, unemployment rates are low, but for more than a million people, employment is elusive. One company helped some of those people

Usually if we were going to be writing something about Mitsubishi Electric Automation—a company that provides an array of automation units including programmable automation controllers, programmable logic controllers, human-machine interfaces, variable frequency drives, computer numerical controllers, robots, software, and more—it would be in the context of the aforementioned items.
But something that the company, which is based in Vernon Hills, Illinois, recently did in Houston, Texas, deserves note. And praise.
The company worked with BenCheri’ Educational Center and Youth Building Success in conducting a training and workforce development program for students in the Acres Homes community in Houston.
The program, according to Mitsubishi Electric Automation, “is specifically oriented towards teenagers, adults, and previously incarcerated persons who encounter difficulties finding sustainable jobs.” In other words, people who might not otherwise have bright prospects.
The five-day program was free, and the company presented CNC Specialist Certification to those who successfully completed the program. Derrick Jordan, mechatronics engineering group manager at Mitsubishi Electric Automation, said, “The Specialist Certification provides each student with a new set of skills to compete and thrive in the Houston area.”
According to the most-recent information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in July 1.5-million people “were marginally attached to the labor force. . . . These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.”
1.5-million people.
These are probably like some of the people who were part of the training program in Houston. But whereas they are marginalized and no doubt disheartened regarding their prospects, those who achieved their CNC Specialist Certification thanks to Mitsubishi Electric Automation are undoubtedly looking at a bright future.
