Momentum Dynamics Corp. has installed a wireless charging system for a transit bus operator in Wenatchee, Wash.

The 200-kW system can fully replenish the battery pack of a BYD K9S electric bus in five minutes. Malvern, Pa.-based Momentum claims the application is the most powerful wireless fast charging system in the U.S.—other chargers operate at about one-fourth of this capacity.

The BYD bus, which is operated by Link Transit and equipped with Momentum’s wireless technology, recharges when parked over a transmitter embedded in the road. Momentum says the system can work in any weather condition and is more energy efficient than plug-in chargers with the same power rating.

The supplier aims to install more wireless charging systems in the U.S. later this year. Expansion into Europe is planned for 2019.
