Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo self-driving unit plans to open an 85,000-sq-ft facility in Mesa, Ariz., later this year to house, support and service the company’s growing vehicle fleet.

The new facility will complement Waymo’s existing facility in nearby Chandler. That site was expanded to 60,000 sq ft in December.

The majority of Waymo’s 600 self-driving vehicles are operated in Arizona. The company installs its controls and sensors in Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans and Jaguar i-Pace electric crossover vehicles.

Waymo, which has been testing autonomous vehicles on public roads in Arizona for several years, launched a robo-taxi pilot program there in December. The vehicles initially include human backup drivers.
