VW Vehicles Will Get Connectivity in 2019

Volkswagen AG says it will begin phasing in technology in 2019 that will enable its vehicles to connect with others (V2V) and the local environment (V2X).
The system will allow equipped cars to exchange information within a few milliseconds about nearby traffic conditions and hazards within a radius of some 500 meters (1,600 feet). They will be able to relay information from vehicle to vehicle and between stationary sensors and themselves.
The technology creates a public wireless local area network (pWLAN) that works independent of cellular phone systems. The network uses a communication standard called 802.11p that was developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
VW says vehicles with pWLAN can alert each other to approaching emergency vehicles, upcoming construction zones, icy roads, traffic signals that are about to change, disabled vehicles in the roadway, sudden traffic bottlenecks and other need-to-know information.
VW didn’t indicate which vehicles will get pWLAN capabilities first or how quickly it will roll out the technology.
