VW to Launch EV Charger Network in Canada

Volkswagen AG has created a new Canadian subsidiary to deploy a network of public charging stations for electric vehicles.
The initiative is part of the carmaker’s diesel emission cheating settlement. Next year, VW’s Electrify Canada unit will begin installing 32 charging centers in metropolitan centers and near major highways in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.
Each site will have about four chargers, including a mix of 50-kW, 150-kW and ultra-fast 350-kW units.
Based in Ajax, Ont., Electrify Canada will manage the rollout and continuing oversight of the network. The company will work with local vendors to locate, build and operate the system.
VW’s Electrify America unit, which was formed in February 2017, plans to erect more than 2,000 quick-charge points at about 500 stations across the U.S. by the end of 2019. In April the company hired ABB, BTC Power, Efacec Electric Mobility and Signet EV to install the U.S. chargers.
