Volkswagen AG's Porsche unit is preparing to acquire a 25% stake in German carbon-fiber maker Capricorn Composite GmbH. The companies expect to complete the deal within about two weeks.
Capricorn currently supplies carbon-fiber plastic components for Porsche's 918 Spyder supercar and LMP1 race cars.
The deal gives VW a second source of weight-saving carbon-fiber plastics the company is likely to use more broadly to meet future fuel economy standards. The company already owns nearly 10% of competing supplier SGL Carbon SE.
