Volkswagen AG’s $15.3 billion settlement resolves multiple civil fines and lawsuits over cheater diesels the company sold in the U.S. But the company still could face major criminal charges related to its wrongdoing.

The U.S. Dept. of Justice is pursuing a criminal investigation launched in March into possible bank or wire fraud under the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act. DoJ is looking into possible charges that VW used false claims to boost the market value of its diesels, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper said four months ago the department also is weighing a separate charge of tax fraud, which would claim VW is responsible for winning federal tax credits for customers who bought the company’s supposedly ultra-low-emission diesels.
