Volkswagen AG says it has repaired only 50,000 of 8.5 million diesel-powered cars in Europe it illegally equipped with software to evade emission tests, Reuters reports.
VW began recalling and fixing affected vehicles in January. The process is governed in large part by model-by-model approvals from KBA, Germany’s environmental regulatory office. The agency so far has approved updates for VW’s diesel Amarok pickup truck and Golf hatchback and Audi’s diesel A4 and A5 sedans.
A recall of some 160,000 VW Passat cars in Germany was suspended a month ago until KBA could confirm that the emission control adjustment to lower nitrogen oxides did not also raise carbon dioxide emissions. VW is required to bring NOx emissions into compliance without affecting a vehicle’s fuel efficiency or noise level.
