Volkswagen AG has agreed to an EU-wide “action plan” that will accelerate its efforts to fix 8.5 million of its cars that were equipped with diesel engines rigged to evade emission limits.
The pledge came after EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Vera Jourova met with Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, VW’s lead negotiator in the diesel crisis, on Wednesday, Reuters reports.
Earlier this week VW estimated it has repaired only about 6%, or 510,000, of the targeted cars to date.
VW says it will notify all affected owners by the end of this year and bring their vehicles into regulatory compliance by autumn 2017. But the company continues to resist calls by some government officials, including Industry Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska, for VW to compensate owners of the afflicted diesels.
An unidentified EU official tells Reuters that questions of penalties against carmakers or compensation to owners are matters to be decided by the regulators and courts of each member state.
