VW Plans 10-Speed Transmission, Super-Output Diesel

Chairman Martin Winterkorn tells a symposium in Vienna the strategy will enable VW to meet its goal of reducing average new-vehicle carbon dioxide emissions to 95 g/km by 2020.
VW has lowered the fuel consumption of its gasoline and diesel engines more than 30% since 2000, Winterkorn says. He predicts another 15% improvement by the end of this decade, thanks to lighter architectures, lower friction, better thermal management and enhanced combustion.
Winterkorn offered no details about the upcoming 10-speed transmission. But he did say VW Group will offer electrified powertrains in all vehicle classes it makes. In the medium term, most of these will be plug-in hybrid systems that can travel as far as 50 km (31 miles) in electric-only mode. The company is preparing to launch two such powertrains in the Audi A3 small hatch and Porsche Panamera sport sedan. These will be followed by similar powertrains in such models as the Audi A6 large sedan, Porsche Cayenne crossover and VW Golf hatch and Passat sedan.
VW's upcoming high-output diesel will feature a modular design, variable valvetrain and a fuel injection system operating at about 3,000 bar (43,500 psi), according to Winterkorn.
He says VW Group also will expand its array of natural gas-powered cars. New models joining the recently announced eco-up! city car, which emits only 79 g/km of CO2, will include the Golf TGI BlueMotion and Audi A3 g-tron small hatchbacks.
