Volkswagen AG says one of its diesel-powered Passat sedans has covered 1,626 miles on a single tank of fuel under real-world driving conditions.
The 2012 Passat was piloted by professional fuel-economy drivers John and Helen Taylor in a three-day trip from Texas to Virginia last week. The two drove during daylight hours, took turns at the wheel and were on the road no more than 14 hours per day. They also hauled 120 lbs of luggage.
The test car was a stock Passat equipped with a 2.0-liter, 140-hp diesel and six-speed manual transmission. The car has a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rating of 43 mpg but averaged 84 mpg during the trip. The Taylors filled up with ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel for the run.
