Volkswagen AG is offering $1,000 and free roadside assistance to U.S. customers with vehicles powered by 2.0-liter diesel engines that were rigged to cheat on federal emission tests.
The “goodwill” package consists of a $500 prepaid Visa card that can be used anywhere, a second $500 prepaid Visa card for use at VW dealerships and three years of free 24-hour roadside emergency assistance. VW’s Audi unit plans a similar offer for its diesel customers.
The package is intended to placate some 482,000 affected owners while VW figures out what to do about bringing their vehicles into compliance with U.S. emission standards. Accepting the cards does not preclude an owner from suing VW for loss of value resulting from the cheating scandal.
VW’s goodwill package applies to three generations of 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesels in cars made between 2009 and 2015. The offer does not apply to the company’s 3.0-liter V-6 diesels, which the Environmental Protection Agency says also contain “defeat device” software. VW claims the latter group of Audi, Porsche and VW brand vehicles conforms to EPA test rules.
