Volkswagen AG’s VW passenger car unit has named management board member Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz to supervise the resolution of the brand’s diesel cheating problems, effective immediately.
Sanz previously was the board member in charge of procurement. That assignment has gone to Ralf Brandstatter, an industrial engineer who joined VW Group in 1993 and has held several procurement jobs at the brand and group level.
VW also selected Frank Welsch to the board as head of technical development. Welsch, who holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering, has worked at VW since 1994 on concept vehicles and bodywork, structural and product development.
He has been in charge of VW brand bodywork, equipment and safety development since 2011. Welsch replaces Heinz-Jakob Neusser, who reportedly was suspended when the diesel emission-test cheating scandal began two months ago. VW says Neusser remains available for another assignment within the company.
