Volkswagen AG’s underutilized assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., is looking for specialists to support the company’s electric-car program, Automotive News reports.
The move suggests VW has tapped the facility to make at least some of the four “I.D.” branded all-electric vehicles the company plans to introduce in North America by 2025. The array will comprise the Buzz microbus and Crozz crossover vehicle along with electric hatchback and sedan models.
VW brand chief Herbert Diess said last month that Chattanooga was the company’s first choice to make EVs for North America. The factory currently makes the large Atlas crossover, whose sales are brisk, and the Passat sedan, whose popularity has plummeted.
The redesigned Passat due in 2019 will share the MQB platform that carries the Atlas, while the I.D. models all use VW’s MEB electric platform. AN notes that both platforms could be produced on the same line in the Chattanooga facility.
