Volkswagen AG is studying a plan to broaden trade-in incentives for older diesels and expand them to all of Germany, Reuters says.
Since October VW has been paying incentives to owners of Euro 1-Euro 4 spec diesels if they trade them in on new cars. The program targets vehicles in Germany’s 15 most-polluted cities.
Germany’s Bild reported earlier that VW is considering whether to extend the scheme, paying as much as €9,000 ($10,200) for eligible cars throughout the country. A VW spokesman tells Reuters that the company also may launch a nationwide incentive plan for owners of Euro 4 and Euro 5 spec diesels.
BMW, Daimler and VW agreed in 2017 to upgrade control software in 5.3 million of their vehicles to lower their emissions of nitrogen oxides. That program targeted cars that were at least 10 years old, promising a 25% reduction in NOx.
