Volkswagen AG and LG Electronics Inc. have agreed to co-develop a communications platform that will enable vehicles to swap data with their surroundings.
The partners will focus on technologies that connect vehicles and “smart” homes, so drivers can control home security, lighting and appliances remotely. They also will develop an in-car, context-sensitive “notification center” that can provide drivers with recommendations in real time. Finally, the companies plan to develop next-generation infotainment technologies for connected cars.
LG has been supplying auto-visual products for cars since 2007 and showcased some of its advanced technologies last year in the GEA concept car developed by VW’s Italdesign Guigiaro unit. LG also supplies battery cells and electric motors for electric cars, including General Motors Co.’s upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV.
