Volkswagen AG’s Electrify America unit has selected four suppliers to develop and erect more than 2,000 quick-charge points across the U.S. by the end of 2019.
The installers are ABB (Switzerland), BTC Power (California), Efacec Electric Mobility (Portugal) and Signet EV (South Korea)
Electrify America says its array of chargers will range in power from 50 kW to 150 kW in metro areas and as great at 350 kW along interstate highways. The latter units can load an electric vehicle’s battery with 20 miles of range per minute—seven times as fast as current quick-charge systems, according to the company.
The stations will offer multiple types of plugs to accommodate virtually any fast-charge-capable vehicle. The network will feature innovative liquid-cooled cables that are thinner, lighter and easier to handle.
Electrify America LLC was set up to implement a portion of VW’s diesel emission cheating settlement that requires the carmaker to spend $2 billion over 10 years on infrastructure to support zero-emission vehicles in the U.S.
