Volkswagen AG says it has repaired only about 510,000 of the 8.5 million diesel-powered vehicles it equipped with cheater emission control software and sold in Europe.
Germany’s motor vehicle authority (KBA) has approved repairs for some 5.1 million of the vehicles. Manfred Bort, who heads VW’s European diesel recall, writes in the company’s Inside employee magazine that 10% of that group have been “retrofitted with good results,” Reuters reports.
Bort says VW expects to notify all 1.5 million affected owners in Germany by year-end and fix at least half the 8.5 million targeted diesels throughout Europe by then.
Three sizes of diesels—displacing 1.2-, 1.6- or 2.0-liters—are included in the recall. KBA repair approvals are being released on a model-by-model basis.
