Volkswagen AG verifies it will begin in late January to recall EA189 series diesels in Germany that were equipped with software designed to cheat emission control tests.
Most of the estimated 2.5 million vehicles are VW-brand models. But the recall also will fix certain Audi, SEAT and Skoda vehicles.
The company, which outlined its recall plan a week ago, confirms that affected 1.2- 1.6- and 2.0-liter diesels will get a software update requiring about 30 minutes of labor to install. In addition, 1.6-liter engines will be fitted with a mechanical device to smooth the flow of intake air, a step that will add about 20 minutes to the repair time.
VW says the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has fully ratified the proposed repairs. The company says it will begin notifying customers by letter as soon as it receives their addresses from the agency.
The company plans to recall the 2.0-liter engines in the first quarter of 2016, followed by the 1.2-liter diesels in the second quarter and 1.6-liter units in the third quarter.
