Volkswagen AG says it has received approval from German transport authority KBA to recall 1.1 million Audi and VW brand vehicles with diesel engines that use software designed to elude emission requirements.
The recall covers Audi brand A4, A5 and A6 cars and Q5 crossover vehicles; plus VW brand Caddy commercial vans, Golf hatchbacks, Passat sedans and Tiguan SUVs. All are powered by VW’s 2.0-liter “EA 189” diesel.
The engines will receive a software update but no other modifications. VW says the upgrade won’t affect fuel consumption, performance or noise levels.
The new campaign brings to 2.5 million VW Group diesels cleared for repairs out of 8.5 million affected cars, vans and SUV/crossovers in Europe. The company hopes to complete all recalls in the region by about the end of this year.
