Volkswagen AG has begun to fix about 90,000 SEAT Exeo sedans and Audi A4 and A5 cars and Q5 crossovers in Germany that had been rigged to dodge exhaust emission laws.
The vehicles are among the 11 million cheater diesels VW admits selling worldwide, including 8.5 million in Europe. All are equipped with 1.2-, 1.6- or 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesels from the company's "EA 180" engine family.
VW says it is on track to complete 13 similar campaigns to fix 2.5 million vehicles in Germany by year-end. So far it has updated 8,500 Amarok pickup trucks. Last week the company suspended a second round of callbacks involving 160,000 Skoda Superb and VW Passat cars because regulators discovered the repairs reduced fuel efficiency.
Media reports speculate VW will soon launch recalls for 2.0-liter diesels in Golf hatchbacks, Audi A3 small sedans and A6 large sedans. The repair program in Germany is expected to become a template VW recalls elsewhere in Europe.
