Volkswagen Group and its China FAW Group partner broke ground today on a $225 million (1.4 billion-yuan) assembly plant in Qingdao, China.
The facility, which will have capacity to make 300,000 sedans and crossover vehicles per year, will join a 600,000-unit VW-FAW factory under construction in Tianjin. Both facilities, which VW announced a year ago, are scheduled to open in July 2017.
VW currently makes more than two dozen Audi, Skoda and VW brand models in China at nine factories operated with FAW and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. The facilities have combined potential output of 3.53 million vehicles per year.
