Volvo Car Group says it plans to use civilians to help it test self-driving car systems in China.
The company is looking for a willing city in which to conduct the experiments, which would be carried out under specified driving conditions on highways and other main roads. Volvo says it could deploy a fleet of as many as 100 autonomous vehicles for the tests.
The company tells Reuters it wants to use “real people” to evaluate its self-driving technologies under everyday driving situations. Volvo also is eager to push Chinese cities that have expressed support for autonomous driving to become more involved in the development process.
Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson told a conference in Beijing earlier today that implementing self-driving systems will require government legislation that allows such vehicles on public roads. He says the technology could “revolutionize” China’s roads in terms of safety, congestion, pollution and time saving.
