Volvo to Resume Supplying Uber’s Autonomous Test Fleet

Volvo Car Corp. says it will resume supplying as many as 24,000 of it XC90 crossover vehicles to Uber Technologies Inc.’s autonomous car development project next year.
Uber had suspended most of its testing in March after one of its XC90s operating in autonomous mode killed a pedestrian in Arizona. Now, says Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson, the supply agreement is “back on track.”
Samuelsson tells the Financial Times that Volvo aims to become the “supplier of choice” for companies that are developing autonomous shuttle services.
Yesterday Volvo also agreed to partner with Chinese internet search engine Baidu to develop and launch self-driving taxi services in China. The companies plan to use special Volvo-developed vehicles controlled by Baidu’s Apollo software operating system. Volvo has said the vehicles aren’t likely to resemble conventional cars.
