Volvo Car Group plans to add 400 engineers over the next year to help develop next-generation technologies related to automated driving, electrification and safety.
Most of the new hires will be software engineers. Volvo says the majority of them will be based at the company’s main research and development center in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company also is opening a new center in Lund, Sweden, where the first 35 engineers will be located in early September.
Earlier this month Volvo announced a partnership with ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies Inc. to test autonomous vehicles. The carmaker also is launching pilot programs for the technology in Gothenburg, London and China.
Volvo, which is owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, previously has indicated it aims to commercialize vehicles with advanced driver-assist systems in the early 2020s. The company also plans to offer a plug-in hybrid variant of every vehicle it introduces in coming years. The company expects to launch the first of several full EVs by the end of the decade.
