Volvo Car Co. plans to expand its Drive Me public test program to London later next year, soon after launching it in Sweden.
Under the program, Volvo will supply consumers with specially equipped XC90 crossover vehicles that can operate autonomously on some roads under certain conditions. Participants will be able to use each XC90 as their daily vehicle to enable Volvo to collect real-world data.
The previously announced program in Sweden will involve 100 vehicles in Gothenburg. After a smaller pilot initiative, the London program will expand to 100 vehicles in 2018, which Volvo says will make it the largest autonomous driving test in the U.K.
Volvo hopes to introduce the technology in production vehicles by 2020.
