Volvo Car Corp. is boosting the workforce nearly 40% at its Torslanda, Gothenburg, assembly plant in part to meet strong demand for its just-introduced XC90 crossover.
The company plans to hire about 1,300 workers at the factory early next year. The facility is adding a new body shop that will hike annual capacity to 300,000 vehicles. In addition to the XC90, the complex makes S60, S80, V60, V70 and XC70 cars and crossovers.
The new XC90 is Volvo's first model to ride on the company's scalable product architecture, which also will carry a variety of future vehicles.
Volvo notes that its sales were up 9% in January-September. The company predicts full-year volume will expand 10% to a record 470,000 units worldwide.
