Volvo Cars Inc. has decided to double its investment to $1 billion to install a second assembly line in the factory it is building in the U.S.
The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C., says the addition will hike eventual employment at the Charleston plant to 5,500 from the originally planned 2,000. The facility is expected to begin production of S60 sedans next summer. A second model will be announced later, according to the report.
The factory will have capacity to build about 60,000 cars per year, 60% of which are to be exported. Volvo has scheduled a press conference on Sept. 25, presumably to detail its expansion plans.
