Volkswagen AG's Australian unit confirms it will recall about 96,000 diesel-powered vehicles that had been rigged by the company to cheat emission standards, Reuters reports.
VW didn't indicate when the callback would begin or what steps would be necessary to fix the vehicles, mainly because the company is still finalizing its repair strategy. VW said earlier this week it would begin a limited global recall in January and expand it through most of 2016.
Australia's recall will include more than 60,000 VW and 5,000 Skoda brand cars and more than 17,000 VW commercial vehicles. All are equipped with diesels from the company's "E 189" family of engines.
