Uber Technologies Inc. says it has surpassed 2 million cumulative rides worldwide since launching its ride-hailing service six years ago.
The company hit the 1-million ride mark in December, then needed less than six months to double its total as it continues to add drivers and expand into new markets. Uber says 147 rides started at the same second in 16 countries on June 18 to tie for the two billionth trip.
Uber now operates in 450 cities, up from 311 a year ago. But the company also is facing increasing competition, especially in emerging markets such as China and India.
More than one-third (54) of the 147 milestone two billionth trips were taken in China, a market that now includes half of Uber’s top 10 cities by daily ride volume. But the company still is a distant to second there to local provider Didi Kuaidi.
