To address growing safety concerns, Uber Technologies Inc. is launching a pilot program that will record audios of passenger trips.

The program will begin next month in select cities in Brazil and Mexico. Uber also may soon expand such tests to the U.S., The Washington Post reports.

In markets where the system is available, riders can activate the recording through their smartphone app. When a trip ends, users can submit the audio along with a safety report if needed to Uber’s customer service department, which can forward it to the proper authorities.

Introduction in the U.S. is contingent on state privacy laws. But Uber says it is working with law officials and aims to offer the capability nationally.

Uber has come under fire following numerous allegations by riders and drivers of being verbally, physically or sexually assaulted. The company also has been accused of responding to slow or ignoring such complaints altogether.
