Ride-hailing specialist Uber Technologies Inc. plans to open a facility in metro Detroit in “the coming months” to better collaborate with carmakers and suppliers on autonomous vehicle systems.

Sherif Marakby, Uber vice president of Global Vehicle Programs, made the announcement this morning at SAE International’s Convergence conference in Novi, Mich. Details about the size, location and number of employees at the facility are still being finalized, he says.

Last week Uber began testing 20 autonomous Ford Fusions on select routes it offers in Pittsburgh. The company also is working with Volvo to develop a platform for self-driving vehicles.
