Uber Technologies Inc. has suspended its smartphone-based UberPOP ride-hailing service in France, according to Le Monde.
The newspaper says Uber's chief in France said the suspension began Friday evening "to assure the safety" of the independent drivers who provide the service. Demonstrations by licensed taxi operators against UberPOP turned violent last week, and two driver were arrested earlier this week for "illicit activity."
Last month France Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve declared the low-cost service illegal under a new law that took effect in January. Uber has appealed the statute and had been continuing to offer UberPOP in the meantime. The company's costlier service, which uses officially licensed taxi driver, is not affected.
