Uber Technologies Inc. has stopped testing self-driving cars on San Francisco streets after California canceled registrations for the 15-vehicle fleet.
The state threatened to take action as soon as the program began last week, insisting that Uber first obtain a license to test driverless cars on public roads. A defiant Uber claimed its test cars don’t need a special permit because they have a driver on board who is ready to take control of the vehicle.
California defines an autonomous vehicle as having the technology to “drive a vehicle without the active physical control or monitoring by a human operator.” The state has indicated Uber may resume tests after it is granted a permit.
