Ride-hailing service Uber Technologies Inc. has hired a former engineer from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration to assess the idea of on-demand, self-flying aircraft.

Mark Moore is joining Uber as director of engineering for aviation for the company’s Elevate unit. During his more than 30 years at NASA, he did research about applying robotics, autonomous controls and electric propulsion to small aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities.

Uber published a white paper last year touting the introduction of on-demand aircraft as a game changer for transportation within cities and between cities and suburbs. It opined that shuttling people through three-dimensional airspace could end traffic congestion on the ground.

The concept also is being pursued by such companies as French commercial plane maker Airbus SAS and California-based startups Kitty Hawk and Zee Aero.
