Toyota Will Test Hydrogen Power for Factories

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to test hydrogen to help power its Japanese assembly plants as soon as this year.
The scheme would use solar and wind power to extract hydrogen from water, according to The Nikkei. The gas would then be used in fuel cells to operate such factory functions as heating and cooling, which the newspaper says generate about 60% of carbon dioxide emissions from production processes.
Toyota will partner with Fukuoka prefecture and Kyushu University on the hydrogen project, according to the report. It says the company aims to make the factory that builds its hydrogen-powered Mirai sedan completely hydrogen powered by 2020.
The newspaper notes that Japan agreed in December to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 26% by fiscal 2030.
