Toyota Motor Corp. plans this summer to test its fuel cell technology in a heavy-duty truck at the Port of Los Angeles.

The “Project Portal” program will involve a proof-of-concept Class 8 truck powered by a pair of fuel cell stacks and a 12-kWh lithium-ion battery. The fuel cell stacks are based on the system used in Toyota’s Mirai fuel cell-powered sedan.

Designed to meet performance requirements to support short-haul port drayage operations, the fuel cell truck generates 670 hp and 1,325 lb-ft of torque with an estimated driving range of 200 miles per tank of hydrogen. Toyota says the vehicle delivers “excellent acceleration” compared with a diesel-powered truck.

Last month Toyota also began testing fuel cell-powered transit buses in Japan.
