Toyota Motor Corp. plans to begin road tests of a fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck next year in California.

California was chosen because it has the largest network of hydrogen fueling stations in the U.S. No other details about the program were provided.

Toyota, which recently launched the Mirai fuel cell car in California, views fuel cells as having the best long-term potential of any alternative propulsion system. Earlier this year Toyota and its Hino Motors Ltd. affiliate began testing a prototype fuel cell bus in Tokyo. The bus uses the same technology as the Mirai.

Analysts note that fuel cells are particularly well suited for heavy-duty "green" trucks because they offer cost, weight and range advantages over full electric drivetrains in such applications.
