Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to supply fuel cell technology to Chinese carmaker FAW Group and Higer Bus Co.

The deal will support Higer’s plan to launch a fleet of 20 fuel cell-powered buses in its hometown of Changshu later this year. Toyota says China’s Shanghai Re-Fire Technology Co. will serve as system integrator for the program.

The agreement is Toyota’s latest in the past few months to promote fuel cell systems in China. In April the carmaker announced it would supply fuel cell technology to Chinese commercial vehicle maker Beiqi Foton Motor Co. and fuel cell system provider Beijing SinoHytec Co.

Toyota has repeatedly asserted that fuel cell-based electric powertrains are superior in range and refueling speed to those that rely on batteries. The company predicted in May that the cost of fuel cells will plunge to match that of hybrid powertrains by 2029.

The company hopes to secure similar technology supply deals with other commercial vehicle companies in China to help popularize fuel cells in the country.
