Toyota Motor Corp. plans to begin making Prius hybrid sedans in Brazil in 2018, according to The Nikkei.
The newspaper cites a Toyota source who says the company intends to assemble about 1,500 cars per year from kits imported from Japan. Production will be added at Toyota's factory in Sao Bernardo do Campo near Sao Paulo.
Toyota has been importing Prius cars to Brazil since the beginning of 2013. But import taxes double the Japanese price of the hybrid, holding down sales in the country to about 400 units to date.
