Toyota Motor Corp. says it will open a third autonomous vehicle research center in the U.S., this one near the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The facility, which is expected to open in June, will join similar Toyota facilities affiliated with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Stanford institute focuses on technologies that assist an active driver. The MIT hub is dedicated primarily to simulation work. The facility in Ann Arbor will concentrate on fully autonomous driving systems, according to Toyota.

The carmaker says the Michigan facility eventually will employ 50 people. Staffers will include two associate professors from the U-M and 15 researchers to be transferred from the Toyota Technical Center in York Township 14 miles away.

The new research unit will be near the U-M’s Mobility Transformation Center and Mcity test facility and about 16 miles from the 335-acre American Center for Mobility proving ground being developed outside Ypsilanti. The latter facility is expected to become the world's largest autonomous vehicle testing complex.
